About The Artwork

This is part of Wolfgang Nebel's project "in | or | out ". Works of the series depict everyday situations, which have been fragmented by reflections, clippings and partial transparency, comparable to information snippets of the internet. The viewers are challenged to reconstruct the situations of the original setting. It remains open, whether the pictures in the viewers’ brains are realistic or not. "Munich 2014.1" gives an additional aspect: Who is the guy in the photo? Who are the anonymous persons we get information from in the internet? To stay authentic, it has been taken with an iPhone, only postprocessed by an iPhone App to increase contrast and produced as C-Print behind acrylic glass.

Wolfgang Nebel, is a German Professor for Information Technology and Photographer, born 1956 in Wanne-Eickel. He discovered photography as a means of expressing himself already at school. First there were the technical aspects that interested him, later the formal design and finally addressing specific projects. As co-founder of the still active "foto-ag" of the University of Hannover Wolfgang Nebel communicated intensively with contemporary photographers. He was in particular inspired by Heinrich Riebesehl, Michael Schmidt and Lee Friedlander, but also by earlier photographers, in particular Ansel Adams and through a personal aquaintance with Otto Umbehr, known as Umbo. During this period, among others black and white series on industrial workspace or the planting of the urban landscape. Works of Wolfgang Nebel from this period have been shown in group exhibitions: of photo-ag. Due to his professional activities Wolfgang Nebel has reduced his photographic commitment after completing his electrical engineering studies. The passion for photography has remained inspired by the Dusseldorf School of Photography under Bernd and Hilla Becher, in particular Thomas Struth and Andreas Gursky. The intensive professional involvement with computer science and communications motivated Wolfgang Nebel for the series’ "in | or | out" and “public privacy” aspects of the change of our society to a society of digital information and communication through social media. His works on these projects have been and will be shown in solo and group exhibitions:
