Paris Metro Trash is the result of 3 years of photographing trash cans in all of Paris’ 20 arrondissements around the immediate area of each Metro Station. Looking at what Parisian’s throw away provides insight into everyday cultural influences, what they eat, drink and smoke. Representing the Paris Metro Trash project, Parisian presents us with a snapshot of the life of a parisian. The first of three photos representative of the entire Paris Metro Trash project, I selected Parisian because every time I look at this photo I ask myself why was the Hugo Boss perfume box discarded in the street trash can just outside the Arts et Metiers metro station? We can see that it was bought in Sephora, a well known French perfume retailer. Perhaps the person who discarded this packaging was on a date, buying the Hugo Boss at the last minute, putting some on and throwing away the box (though there is no Sephora store around Arts et Metiers). By capturing this image, I like to think I captured a snapshot of some unknown person’s life. I also think this is one of my favourite photos of the project as it really does have a variety of trash that can be seen as quite representative of the entire project. McDonalds, coffee, news, water, perfume - really shows what people consume on a daily basis whilst they’re out and about. After showing this project to a close friend, she remarked the trash cans resemble condoms. I have to agree, I not only think that they look a little like condoms, but they also capture the ejaculate of society’s consummatory pleasures whilst going from A to B. A bold and vibrant print, mounted on 2mm dibond and just like the Paris trash cans, laminated with overlapping edges. Photographed, printed and made in Paris. This photo can be displayed as a standalone piece of art or as part of the Paris Metro Trash series of three photos. A special circular fisheye lens was used so that the photos you see are the photos that were taken.

I love all and any photography. I work as an architectural photographer by day, to fund projects that perhaps only I find interesting. After completing Paris Metro Trash in 2014, which took over 3 years to complete whilst also working full time, I decided to take it international and will complete the Hong Kong Metro Trash and Berlin Metro Trash Projects in 2016. I can't wait to see some the common cultural influences and differences between Asia and the West. It should also be fascinating to look at the differences between East and West Berlin by what they consume and discard on a daily basis.
