Sometimes, as a photographer, you find the image and sometimes the image finds you. The rain started suddenly and I scurried for cover, hastily throwing my coat over my camera as ran into the entrance way of one of Nottingham's many alleyways. Finding shelter my first thought was for my equipment because even professional, weather-sealed cameras are not immune to the British weather. Carefully wiping away the water I pointed the camera down the alley and pressed the shutter, just to check there were no problems, before heading to the dry comfort of a coffee shop. Black americano in hand, I started processing the day's images only to find this remarkable shot. I had caught the raindrops mid-fall against the sodden backdrop of one of Nottingham's lesser known spaces. It was then I was struck by a sudden feeling of deja-vu. Nearly 30 years before I had stood in exactly the same place, a nervous teenage, seeking out the tiny office of a computer company which would become my first employer. That job, that alleyway and the people I met there would shape me and set me on a path which led to my art career. Unexpectedly, that alleyway had gifted me an intensely personal image which combines the dynamic focus of the present and the time softened past.

A lot of my work focuses on the intersection of politics, people and place. For all my life I've lived and worked in Nottingham, forming an intimate bond with the place as it and I continually change. It is out on the streets that I find myself feeling most at home, walking among a myriad of stories and memories. I'm drawn to political events, the numerous rallies and marches of political campaigns. Sometimes tiny affairs protesting the closure of community centre and occasionally mass demonstrations where it seems half the city is on the streets. Whether it is on the streets or back in my studio, I look for the unusual, creating images which suggest a story for the viewer to complete.
