About The Artwork

In this shot the tide is rising around Balance Rock. Every day the tide comes in and out and always this rock stays standing. It amazes me because even in the gales, and major storms we get. Still it stands. I guess it is just another piece of the Haida Gwaii magic! This shot was part of many trips in one day to shoot balance rock. I wanted to try and capture a full day of light at this location. We had been to the rock early in the day prior to this shot. At that time the tide was fully out and our new six month old Australian puppy was racing around the rock. Enjoying tidal pools and basically being a typical six month old pup. On this visit the tide had come in quite a lot but not enough to be fully around the rock. Our pup didn't realize the change in the tide. He went to race around the rock and ended up over his head in the ocean. I will never forget the look of surprise on his face! Every time I see this shot I think of this funny family moment!

Lonnie Wishart grew up on a family farm near the village of McAuley, near the Manitoba / Saskatchewan border. Her childhood engrained in her a deep and abiding love of both a close connection to the land, and the industrial aspect of farming. And critters—from her days in 4H to pets in her family today. One of Lonnie’s first jobs was working as a visitor counselor for Tourism Saskatchewan, and from here she worked in master control for TV news and then literally coast to coast in radio. In the 1990s she moved into newspapers, and it was then that she began Lonnie Wishart Photography—at first as a side business, before moving into art and commercial photography full-time in 1999. Because her photography grew while living in the rainforest of Canada’s Northwest Coast, one of Lonnie’s greatest influences has been, since the beginning, the iconic Canadian landscape painter Emily Carr. At the same time she studied the landscapes of Ansel Adams, the portraiture of Yousef Karsh, the creative work of Freeman Patterson, and many others. Today Lonnie lives with her husband and daughter (and critters) in Prince Rupert, British Columbia. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums across Canada, and published in newspapers and magazines across North America. When not shooting she enjoys gardening. And stopping to shoot pictures of the garden. Or pictures of the dog in the garden. Or… Well, you get the “picture.” Lonnie loves trains. And ships. And planes. And helicopters. And… Well, just about anything else she can get into the viewfinders of her cameras. “Labels are deceiving,” she says. “Whether it’s heavy machinery, portrait work, or atmospheric marketing shots, I’m looking for the beauty in what I see and finding a way to convey how that particular beauty makes me feel.” Lonnie’s work has been widely published and exhibited across North America. She likes to describe her business as “client-friendly and service-oriented”—which means that she likes to have a lot of fun working, come in on budget and on deadline, and exceed every client’s photography and videography expectations.
