Originally shot for a travel feature on Bolivia in 2013 but not used by the magazine. These are images of Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia. Salar de Uyuni is an amazing place, found in Bolivia's Altiplano it is one of the most extreme and remarkable locations in the world. A vast salt flat, left-over from evaporated prehistoric lakes, the salt flats stretch for more than 4,050 square miles, it is the world’s largest salt flat and this becomes abundantly clear when seen from the air. On the ground a thick crust of salt extends to the horizon, covered by quilted, polygonal patterns of salt rising from the ground. The harsh beauty and sense of desolation of Salar de Uyuni makes for an incredible other-worldly experience. Ever since leafing through black and white images of Angkor Wat (Cambodia) in my encyclopaedia as a small child, I have dreamed of visiting strange and exotic places. I never imagined at that time that my life would involve travelling the world for travel magazines doing just that. A successful photograph, at least for me, depends upon suggesting a mood or emotion. I'm a romantic, in that the image should transcend the everyday to produce a visual representation of what I felt at the moment I encountered the scene. I try to capture the magic of being in the moment through colour, lighting, subject matter or composition. My love for travel is matched only by my love of photography as a medium for expression. It is a craft that I have spent many hours, days and years enjoying and also trying to teach to others. Photography for me is both supremely simple and at the same time extremely difficult, it's mysterious in that way and I have a deep love for it whether I'm photographing a play of light on a wall near my home in Ramsgate or some hard to reach destination in Bolivia.

Of his work Gary says; "I see my work as being in the Romantic tradition. My work has been described as cinema-graphic, otherworldly and emotionally charged. I love to take pictures, I'm interested in people, culture, society and a sense of place. I travel a lot and I am a romantic of sorts. I was once described as having a 19th Century sensibility. Maybe that is because I like nostalgia, found things and a touch of fantasy. My aim is to find magic in the everyday."
