About The Artwork

For me, making a photograph is the instantaneous death of a creative moment, and the birth of an eternal image. My photographs are created from visual conversations inspired by the feeling felt from the subject. The "Decisive Moment” a photograph is taken happens when the visual conversation around plot and structure become quiet in my thoughts. Any subject can inspire me. It always starts with a feeling that sparks a creative conversation with the subject. Each photograph is a journey of visual conversation, metaphors, and story telling composition that build to a moment when the image capture in the camera. This "Decisive Moment” is the instantaneous death of a creative moment and the birth of a visual image. The “Camera Tool” is an umbilical fulcrum between me and the subject that serves as caretaker of our relationship. Its viewfinder both hides everything unwanted and governs everything seen. I shoot full frame and do not crop anything out after creating the image. Each frame captured is its own world created in the camera’s viewfinder meant to tell a unique story. If the viewer feels they know the subject at first glanced, they have a lot to discover. Each photographic composition I create is bound by different rules dictated by each subject. There are moments of relationship building and reactive conversation with the subject before I find the visual answer that represents the inspired feelings. I contemplate every visual element, angle, shape, form, value, texture, pattern, and color within the frame to discover its narrative purpose; the original feeling that inspired me to make the photograph. This can take a few minutes or happen in less than a second. Each composition change and hesitation in time steer the narration to the "Decisive Moment." For me, triggering the shutter at the "Decisive Moment" almost happens in hindsight; I notice it is triggered without consciously making it happen because my full thoughts are involved with conversational topics, not the camera. This is much like when we have conversations with other people; we don't think "I am going to talk now," we just find ourselves speaking up.
