I took the original source photograph for this art work while on assignment covering holiday beach festivities in San Diego, California. This boy stood looking at me blankly while shoving his whole hand into his mouth. His mother was sun bathing behind him. I am still amused at how shoving your hand into your mouth seems like a perfectly reasonable thing to do for a child, even fun. I created this handmade image by drawing, scratching, painting and distressing the original elements then making a final series of prints.

Hello, my name is Matthew Bowler. This is where I toot my own horn, so here goes. I am an Emmy award winning journalist in San Diego, California. I come from a long line of journalists but I do not have traditional broadcast beginnings. In college I studied art with a specialty in painting and printmaking. In my last year of college I got married and a year later moved to the South of France. While there, I participated in art exhibitions and was even written about in “La Marseillaise” weekly newspaper, in which they called my alternative process photography “les oeuvres impossible”, or “the impossible works”. After my year in Provence, I returned to San Diego and began to work as a freelance photographer. At that time most of my work was editorial photojournalism for newspapers and magazines. Some years later I transitioned into television news where I started as a video editor. I soon began working as a videographer. But I never lost my love for still photography.
