About The Artwork

One rainy afternoon in Seattle, I found myself in the chapel of St Ignatius, a lovely small space designed by Steven Holl. What captured my attention were the series of oval windows in each of the heavy wooden doors at the entrance: quotidian details most visitors pass by each day and most likely never notice. But the magic came in spending time crouched down looking through one of the lower windows with my my rangefinder camera. In that oval shape outlined in the thick dark aged wood appeared a dreamlike scene: a blurred landscape with a figure holding a colorful umbrella that creates a vivid burst which punctuates the dark grey cloud-filled sky. This image has rich colors--and the dark wood surrounding the oval goes from black to deep browns as we get closer to the window that opens on this rainy day. It is professionally printed on matte finish archival cotton rag paper with 2" borders all around. I recommend either trimming the borders to the image and floating it on a white matboard, projected within a simple frame, or framing it flat edge-to-edge with no border to heighten the drama.

Larry Simon takes his inspiration from seemingly everyday objects, surfaces and scenes to create dreamlike narratives shrouded in a sense of the unknown: the Inner World residing in our subconscious--a place where we cannot fill in all the blanks. As a photographic artist, he often works with a blend of sharp and soft focus, presenting his work in photo collage form or as digital prints. A constant roamer, Larry Simon is based in Chicago. Influences: Gerhard Richter, Saul Leiter, Haruki Murakami, Alfred Brendel
