About The Artwork

I grew up in Italy - an arguably still patriarchal and chauvinist society - as the only male in my family, since my parents separated when I was a teenager. Beside my mother's marriage, many years later, also my sister's relationship shattered. I witnessed full of admiration how both of them slowly rediscovered themselves away from the marital life, while still remaining unquestionably committed to work and family. I strongly believe this will be a decade in which women, and in particular women of color and of other minorities, will solidify their leading role in our societies. I cherish this as a long overdue change for the better. This work is an homage to women's self awareness, self acceptance and self reliance. It was inspired by the pioneering portraiture works of surrealist photographers from the beginning of the last century - e.g. Man Ray - and reflects my propensity for merging influences and impressions from other arts - in this case, sculpture - into photography. Arguably, also my applied-art background shines through this work: the pose, the skin texture and an overall polished look resonate with fashion and beauty photography. This work also reflects my love for simple, geometrical shapes. Squares represent strength and stability (or the subconscious longing thereof) in the psychology of shapes. And cubes are what I mindlessly used to doodle on paper while talking on the landline telephone as a kid. All in all, merging classical aesthetics with a feel for deconstruction, minimalism, the surreal and the abstract, I consider this one of my most distinctive works so far. TECHNICAL DETAILS This photo - just like all my other works on Saatchiart - is printed straight onto the surface of the brushed aluminum Dibond panel through a dye sublimation process. A modern-looking print with a matte finish with one peculiarity: the bright parts of the image are omitted from the print (clear-base metal printing), therefore, in these areas, the underlying aluminum remains visible. Despite having an overall matte look, the print also has a vivid, metallic shimmer to it. Clear-base aluminum prints are modern- but at the same time vintage-looking, bringing back - emphasized by the black and white photography - memories of tintype photography. This contrast provides my photos a timelessness that perfectly complements their iconic power. Depending on the light and the viewing angle, the aluminum surface shimmers differently, therefore constantly altering the prints’ appearance in unpredictable ways and making the experience of viewing - and owning - one of my artworks a more engaging experience. Prints on aluminum are thin (0.3cm), sturdy and incredibly light. Being pre-treated with UV light protects them from light damage, dust particles and moisture. As a matter of fact, not only are aluminum prints rust-proof, they are also - differently from most other print materials - suitable for bathrooms and sheltered outdoor areas. My prints -unless otherwise stated- are always fitted with an aluminum frame on the back that makes them ready to hang, vertically or horizontally, and that make up for an eye-catching 'float' effect when hanging. Each limited-edition print is signed with a unique signature. The certificate of authenticity testifies the artwork's nature, originality, and the number of the limited-edition.

Alessandro Corsini is a visual artist working with video and photography, based in Berlin, Germany. Born in Milan (Italy) in the seventies, having grown up on the pristine beaches of Sardinia, he had his first encounter with B&W film photography during a course at his intermediate school in Maryland, USA. The interest for media has since guided his multifaceted formation, leading him not only to study and work with different media, but actually exploring them through artistic, scientific, and applied arts lenses. His eclectic body of work is a reflection of his free spirit, cosmopolitan upbringing, and interdisciplinary background. His photographic research focuses on fine-art, conceptual works that deconstruct/decontextualize traditional photographic genres and techniques, in the pursuit of a new, purely artistic, definition of photographic iconicity.
