Photographed just as the sun broke over the horizon, this image of Shiprock (the magma core of an ancient volcano in northeastern New Mexico) was captured while standing at the base of the 60-foot high magma wall--the run-off from the volcano when it erupted. The golden glow of the magma core and wall lasted only a few minutes beyond sunrise. Quickly the drama of the early morning light on the land and the sky was lost.
