ABOUT THE ARTWORK

NOTE: New churches, added to the series, can be found by searching for 'church new mexico elemental phenomenon’, OR, by clicking Collections in the Mark Goebel Profile page… then clicking the Collection ’New Mexico Churches - An Elemental Phenomenon’. Snow falling on San Francisco de Asis, Rancho de Taos, New Mexico, November 16, 2015. Shot with a Sony a7R, using a 55mm Zeiss lens (the sharpest autofocus lens ever tested by ). This is one such church image, of a work of nearly 90 images, in a series called 'New Mexico Churches - An Elemental Phenomenon'. The 34H x 49W inch framed print, using Moab Entrada Rag (), fine-art, archival paper, and, printed with archival, permanent, Giclée pigments (), is dry-mounted on Dibond e-panel (), using a DryTac Vacuum Press. The composite is then framed with a 2" black wood frame (white wood frame available). Before framing, the print is given 2 coats of Breathing Color Timeless varnish, applied with a robotic, HVLP spray system. This gives the print UV protection, anti glare, and protection against the elements. Varnished print can be cleaned with a damp sponge. Suitable for outdoor display, out of the sun and covered by an awning to keep rain of the surface. NOTE: Limited Edition (LE 2/15) will be written on the bottom left border of the print, and, the print will be signed by Mark Goebel, before shipping.

I have photographed 44 years; 37 years film, the rest digital. When I moved to New Mexico (from North Dakota) in 2010, I got my first digital camera and started doing landscapes and churches. I convert many of them to Black and White, using a technique called chromatic grayscale conversion. I enjoy the quest of locating, finding the landscapes and churches and capturing not only an image, but the spirit, the unique personality, the phenomena that sometimes occurs. For the landscapes, the phenomenon may  include the varying climate, light, luminance, composition. For me, this is the idea of ‘natural phenomena’. For the churches, the phenomenon may include the creativity of the artisans who constructed them; the indigenous materials; the unique personality. For me, this is the idea of ‘elemental phenomena’. Often I wait for the full moon to illuminate the scene; to reveal a bit of its secrets, its texture, colors, emotions, that emerge only at night.
