Sticks and Stones Photograph

There is an ancient tradition amongst some tribes that as you pass through life and through places you may attach some small talisman of those moments to your staff or stick. Thereafter, you will carry something of those places with you and they can be used to prompt memories of those experiences. I had wanted to explore that concept in an image that could not only reference those ideas but also to provide a journey for the viewer to explore within the picture itself. This studio set-up was one of the most difficult projects I've ever devised as the complete assemblage was precariously balanced and depended wholly on alignment and friction to hold it in place. Numerous set-ups crashed to the ground or elements would slide away as I replaced a previous item that had fallen. The shot itself was then, in fact, a journey in itself.
