In May of 2009, I decided to visit Beijing. I was living in South Korea at the time, and I thought I would take advantage of the short flight. My interest in Beijing was brought on by the protests in Seoul a year earlier about the summer Olympics. I waited a year to visit because I wanted to see how the Olympics affected Beijing. What I discovered upon visiting Beijing was constant construction. It felt like they were still building leading up to the Olympics, even though it had passed a year later. What I found odd was that the government was demolishing the old historical buildings and replacing them with exact replicas, but instead of replacing the wood construction, they replaced them with concrete replicas. What else I strange about visiting Beijing was the strong military presence. I felt like I was constantly being observed.

Ryan McLay born in 1977 in Leduc, Canada is currently based in Santiago, Chile. For his art practice, he is primarily a photographer, but he also explores other art mediums such as digital media, video, and sculpture. Ryan McLay received his formal training focusing on sculpture from the Alberta University of Arts (formerly Alberta College of Art & Design) in 2002 which he received his "Bachelor's of Fine Arts". With no formal training in photography, he was exposed to many photographers while studying. Photographers that greatly impacted how he sees the world are fellow Canadians such as Edward Burtynsky, Fred Herzog, and Jeff Wall. Looking outside Canada he admired such photographers as Andreas Gursky, David Hockney, Cindy Sherman, and Magnum group. This in turn shaped his photography practice by focusing on themes such as urban decay, postmodernism, and industrial featurelessness as his backdrop. From 2007 to the present he has lived outside of Canada. His life abroad started with South Korea, followed by Australia, Kuwait, Costa Rica, Qatar, and now his current location Chile. Ryan McLay has exhibited both in Canada and abroad. In group shows he have exhibited at “La Casa Cultural Heredia Alfredo Gonzales Flores, in Heredia, Costa Rica. “FADA Los Angeles Art Show 2010”, in the USA, and “Peace Project” at Bupyeoung History Museum, in Bupyeoung, South Korea. He also exhibited a solo show in Seoul, South Korea.
