About The Artwork

Where words can do justice, there is always more that the realm of poetry can do and especially when the occasion is to close the final chapter of an adventure most beloved. My faithful reader, to thank you in person with a cup of tea for following so closely the arc of my travels from one pole to another would have been one of many dreams come true but we are all bound by the enclosures of circumstance in this life. Yet, if your Faith remains solid and true who knows where the winds will take us. For the meanwhile, I pray that you will accept the following gesture of gratitude, in the form of a poem, for your kind readership and for partaking with me in spirit a journey that opened my eyes to the natural beauty of the northern British isles and the warmth that was mine to feel in the arms and faces of family reunited… A southern scarlet lady was I who flew to shires north Blustered by North Sea gales but golden honey still flowed forth In the kindness of old faces and faces new, ah the joy of kin! Family is not a house but the home you carry within Through black vales of words, over patchwork photography You smile to yourself today because you know you are in my story Oscar Wilde nor Woody Allen could ever hope to win Against the mighty mouth of Mr Talha, a genius in child’s skin His rule over his subjects in Northumberland’s hills and moors Officiated with honours thanks to his self-proclaimed pyjama laws Uncle bemused at the red fizzy potion, on a plate a jumbo chocolate waffle Forks went digging in from hands many, how comically unlawful! Aniqa caught us in time and her smarty pants phone captured the entire crew The only photo of me but alas, like me, it never grew! LOVE LOVE LOVE repeated across the firmament of the shops Hearts strung by an anonymous admirer, he certainly came up tops! Strung too were precious beads and gems made by Aunty, an artist most modest Watched by the boatman on the plate in his world of rivers and forest A secret garden, a green dormant bible of ivy tongues and herbs strange How thankful that mad bull didn’t trespass, luckily my pistol was in range Although Mr Penguin supposed I’d shoot, hence mouth open in frenzied plead But bullets aren’t necessary when empty crisp packets could easily intercede! In the Library of Waterstones, Alexandria must have felt jealousy A place the three of us could easily accept lifetime tenancy Nominating the Mr and Miss for each family member in our tree I think that day we altered Waterstones’ biochemistry! Stone castles from Hadrian’s time and walls bruised by decay We stomped up hills and watched the town, in parks we sought to play Mahin windowed by wooden beams whilst Alina stuck on see-saw high Mr Budgie’s tweets that sweetly shrilled, was he singing of the sky? City draped in Kraken darkness, not a star to be seen Winds sharp over whetstone but our eyes obstinately keen Bridges giant, bent from bank to bank and waters silently serene Jewels of Ottoman raiders splashed, colours sing tambourine A southern scarlet lady was I who flew to shires north Blustered by North Sea gales but golden honey still flowed forth In the kindness of old faces and faces new, ah the joy of kin! Family is not a house but the home you carry within Through black vales of words, over patchwork photography You smile to yourself today because you know you are in my story… Photography & Poem: © Masufa Khatun | Mazzy Khatun Photo Stories | Winter Reunion Series | Northumberland | UK 2015

An ardent visual storyteller, I am a self-taught photographer who continuously seeks to lens-pen and archive fleeting moments of life's eccentricities, to capture flashes of pictorial haikus encountered in my everyday walkabouts and to use the frame as a time capsule by which to illuminate the often neglected richness, splendour and depth of the story of the individual. My trusty partner in all my ventures is a Panasonic Lumix whom everyone in my circle has come to know as 'Lumiere'. Now you do too! Update 2014! Lumiere has a new buddy: a pretty Leica prime lens otherwise known as 'Laika'! The adventure just thickened! | Each Life is the greatest Story ever told... | PHOTOGRAPHS IN THIS PORTFOLIO AND ALL ACCOMPANYING TEXT AND POETRY: © Masufa Khatun | 2014 | 2013 How I Keep Myself Out Of Mischief: Teacher Visual Storyteller Poet Writer Traveller | When The Classroom Seats Are Extra Comfortable: BSc Psychology [Southampton University] Cert.
