I lived in Scotland for a while, in a city called Dundee, and while there was not much rusty metal there to photograph, I did manage to find a spectacularly corroded garbage skip in the back of a grocery store that held some fabulous potential images. I had already finalized the color processing and cropping of this piece before I realized that, coincidentally, the shape of the blue field at the bottom of the image loos remarkably similar to an arial view of the city of Dundee, complete with town center, main roads, and outlying neighborhoods! The river on the south border of Dundee is called the Tay, and the location itself can be described as "Tayside," so this piece is aptly named for several reasons. ***** Canvases of this size I prefer to ship unstretched so everyone can save a bit of money and effort. The dimension listed is the image size, and there is an additional 3-inch black border that allows for stretching or framing once received by the buyer. Every piece is signed, dated, and numbered by the artist, and each piece comes with a certificate of authenticity for good measure.

Some people are startled when they realize my pieces aren't paintings, and though my goal isn't necessarily to fool anyone, I love that much of my work has a painterly quality, because that means I've been successful in taking an unremarkable object or surface, like a scrap of rusted metal or corroding section of pipe, and giving it an unexpected new and colorful life--and perhaps a bit of immortality. ***** I grew up in Southern California, and I graduated from UCLA in 1993. I had parents who were professors of photography and art history, so the absorption and appreciation of art (however subconscious) while growing up just came with the territory. As an adult living in Los Angeles, I indulged my creative and aesthetic impulses by working as a film & television makeup artist. On set and off, my camera was never far from my side, and I always took a lot of snapshots, but the thought of making art with my camera hadn't yet occurred to me. In 2003, I took a road trip to Seattle, fell instantly in love with the climate and the city itself, and moved here permanently less than two months later. Something about the way the climate of the Pacific Northwest affects the deterioration of industrial materials intrigued me and inspired me to begin taking photos of my new surroundings with a much more thoughtful eye than ever before. In the years since the move to Seattle, the urge to photograph the city has focused itself from the Big Picture to the Fairly Small, and it was that shift in perspective--and the striking images it produced--that inspired me to pursue my take on fine art photography in earnest.
