The Cheerleader Photograph

This bedraggled cheerleader was a Happy Meal giveaway at MacDonald’s restaurants in the 1990’s. Unlike the brides in this collection, she was not carefully acquired and stored but was found in a cardboard box put out at the curb for garbage collection. Despite her travails, she was in pretty good shape and spent a decade or two on a shelf in a darkened room. However, when I was preparing her for her moment before the camera, I used a soft, sable, watercolor brush to waft away the flyaway hair covering her face and the hairs just broke off at her skull, the nylon had become so brittle. Ars Longa, Vita Brevis. Despite her worn skirt, pleats awry, and her scalp disintegrating, she will lead, with pom-poms aflame, the final cheer.
