A rickshaw runner sits in traffic waiting for business as a blanket of fog is about to cover the city. Pulled Rickshaws were an inexpensive, popular mode of transportation across Asia in the 19th century. Peasants who migrated to large Asian cities often worked first as a rickshaw runner. It was "the deadliest occupation in the East, and the most degrading for human beings to pursue." Pulled Rickshaws are still widely used in Kolkata. From my series "Micro-Shops of India". A deeply personal, sometimes critical, sometimes poetic set of photographs gathered while documenting my wanderings around the streets in India, being absorbed by the melancholy of the light.
