Passing through the busy streets of Hamadan, one of the oldest cities in the world, like a raptor I searched for my next prey. I came across a small shop where I was drawn to a white taxidermic seagull with a cigarette attached to it's beak. Delicately placed in the corner on the shelf, the once dignified living creature had turned into a mundane object to the passing pedestrians and the salesman himself who must have lost touch with nature. Shooting on the streets, I rarely engage in conversation with my subjects, nor give them any specific action/direction. I appear as a walking corpse. Nothing more than a fleeting illusion. However, the joy I takeaway with is more than an image. I also create an awareness by bringing attention to what’s fading away. We have occupied ourselves with the endless pursuit of unnecessary things that we have forgotten to look, to feel, and to appreciate and perhaps protect. When I take an interest in an object or while shooting a subject, I arouse a field of energy for those nearby. Pleasure lies in seizing this moment where the salesman stirring in the shadows, exhibits such a powerful expression with fixating eyes. He brings the gull back to life. And whispers, “Wake up.” ©Golnaz Jamsheed (2013). All Rights Reserved.
