About The Artwork

In the winter of 2005 I climbed on Manhattan bridge. Looking for a way to the top of the West tower I climbed down onto a platform which gave me a startling view on the icy East River.

The works of Wouter van Buuren (the Netherlands, 1972) are reflections on the experience of space and time. Van Buuren explores new ways to represent the landscape and the experience of being in it and traveling through. The resulting works are collages of photographs which are often shot from high and hard to access locations. These locations include rooftops, bridges and electricity towers. Fragments of the vantage points are often present in the work. The collages are digitally composed but the image is never manipulated. Van Buuren’s work is layered in the sense that it does not only reconstruct the landscape but also reflects its own creation process. The work reflects on the notion of perception itself.
