The Witching Hour: Graveyard Trickery Photograph

This graveyard lies in a valley in the Lake District, bordering a vast forest, which spreads densely over a luscious mountain range. As light fades the play of colours come into their own across the canvas of clouds laying heavy over the tops of the trees. The glow from the declining sun enriches the dark swathes of shadows enveloping the graveyard; highlighting the moss on the stone walls, the richness of the brick of the chapel and the poignancy of the steeple against the sky. It is at this time of evening, as light drains away that you confuse imagined apparitions with visually stimulating reality; moving shadows with ghostly figures; the pull of the dark and allure of shadowy crevices with enchantment. Although compelled to pull yourself away back to the safe and homely glow of artificial light, you feel rooted to the spot; eyes drinking in the contrasting colours, continuously readjusting to the light until - half blinded - you have no choice but to return. And in doing so you have witnessed the witching hour.
