About The Artwork

" The seat of Achilles" .The composition is from a series of images composed for a fine art book. The original image was taken on an 8x10 large format view camera using Kodak vericolor III color negatives. This composition, to me, foreshadows the moment when Achilles, camped at the waters edge, gazed into the horizon and contemplated leaving Troy... but the tide of war set the scene for his return to the battle and immortality. The incoming tide in this scene rises and falls over seven feet to expose Achilles seat every 12 hours. Limited edition archival prints are taken from scans of the 8x10 color negatives and printed via giclee printing. Signed and authenticated with a hand written letter on hand made paper.

Artist- photographer- writer- historian Lives in Canterbury, New Zealand, on a horse stud farm. Began drawing seriously as a ten year old. Purchased first 35mm SLR at sixteen, entered the photographic profession aged 18 after migrating to Melbourne Australia to be employed by the largest photographic company in Australasia in 1979. Formed own company at the age of 22. Retired from the commercial photographic world at the age of 25 to soak my soul in nature by moving back to the South Island of New Zealand to dedicate my life to the principle of beauty and composing fine art photography on large format cameras. Made initial studies on a 5x4 flatbed camera and Ektachrome. After studying the light and color palette of the South Island for a further 4 years, built a photographic laboratory and started composing with an 8x10 large format view camera using Kodak Vericolor III. Considered one of the finest color technicians in Australia, large format color negatives and the corresponding positive prints seemed to me the ideal medium to capture the fascinating purity of light in the land of the long white cloud. The golden period of 1992/93 produced a portfolio of work initially composed for an up market fine art photographic book. 1993 also delivered the extraordinary into my life, destiny called and Gnothi sauton, " know thyself" awoke the Kundalini of my spiritual past. This led to the discovery of a famous artwork, a long lost portrait of one of the greatest geniuses the world has known, while I was away composing in the Southern Alps of New Zealand. Back then, my teachers for quite some time in understanding beauty were Socrates, Vincent Van Gogh, John Keats and my beloved Mozart. You might say we were all of one mind as I lived and breathed their existence to compose my images on the 8x10 ground glass. Vincent's power of composition, the philosophy of Socrates, and the flight of imagination of Keats seduced my power to create, and Mozart....Mozart added a dimension of absolute beauty beyond words to the realms of eternal "feelings". I would listen to Mozart before and after composing my own work, I started studying his life and music back in 1988 and therefore you can imagine my sense of wonder the day when I walked into an old gold mining town in 1993 and found a portrait of Mozart with what appeared to be his signature underneath... of course I had no idea at the time that I had something authentic.
