About The Artwork

There is a lot of antagonism in the world. We tend to look and amplify each other's differences and use these differences to hate and vilify each other. Like a forest, humanity gets its beauty from diversity. In my country Kenya, Lions, Elephants and Men have coexisted for centuries; as Kings in their own right. We fight at times, but we understand that we have to live together in respect and admiration of our differences. This artwork is a reminder and expression of diversity; and that that diversity is not only beautiful, but also empowering. Our diversity is our strength, and if we walk together, we can travel far and see many things.

Wachira Mwangi is a self taught, digital artist, photographer and painter from Nairobi Kenya. He was raised in the slopes of Mt. Kenya. After finishing college and working for about 3 years, he apprenticed under British photographer David Beatty. David was instrumental in turning Wachira Mwangi into a professional who understood his own artistic journey. Wachira Mwangi is greatly influenced by African mythology, on which he was raised on. His work aims to use African wisdom, perspectives and stories to tell the story of Humanity. He is motivated by the history of his people. The rich culture of the land and the long line of injustices that have plagued the land and and the deep spirituality of his ancestors. It is through this work that he wishes to open up uncharted areas of the mind for the viewer, and communicate a global truth via a very local story. His creative process involves writing a story as he hikes across his native land, sometimes up Mt. Kenya and sometimes to the old abandoned and vandalised shrines of his native tribe. These stories are considered taboo even by his own kin. And he understands that the longer he looks into the abyss, soon enough it will stare back at him. Real treasures are to be found where you least want to look. And that is exactly where he wants to direct you. Into the madness: that's where wisdom lies Wachira is a great admirer of Alexander Mcqueen.
