About The Artwork

This is one image from an ongoing series of studies of the Alexander Calder sculpture, Two Disks, which sits in front of the Hirshhorn Museum on the National Mall in Washington, DC. It is a black and white photography that I color toned. Color can be distracting from the power inherent in black and white whereas color has limited power. In that I mean color has its own inherent power. It's red or green or orange or blue etc. Whereas black and white has that - black and white - and all the grays in between which are akin to black and white and therefore are derivative and are in a sense natural inheritors of the black and white's power. Color digital photograph printed for this edition on an Epson 9900 inkjet printer on Hahnemuhle German Etching Paper with Epson Archival Endurachrome Inks. Limited Edition Prints on Hahnemuhle paper and Endurachrome Ink 5x7 ..............$75 8x10.............$150 11x14...........$350 16x20...........$500 20x24...........$2,000

I am a photographic artist and photography instructor. For years I produced black and white photographs with very little interest in color work. Recently I have expanded and redefined my work to include black and white and color photo-etching and the layering of my photographic images. By adding color, adding and reducing contrast and repetitive layering of similarly layered images, I am able to create entirely different images that have increased depth and perception. I am trying to produce a cubism effect through a modern abstract process. Photography, reaches significant highs as an art form when it illuminates the world around us. The artist's unique perspective illuminates that kernel of our being - our collective and universal being. That image can be a constant reminder of the uniqueness of the universe and the pervasive beauty that surrounds us.
