Waiting for the Rapture - Limited Edition of 1 Photograph

This piece is about memory, innocence and naivety. Raised in a conservative Catholic family - I was told (for many years) that my First Holy Communion would be the best day of my life. I was so excited - dressed as a child bride and waiting for 'the something amazing' to happen. After church, our cousins came over to celebrate the event (as was tradition at the time). I felt empty and strange about being so underwhelmed on what was supposed to be 'the best day of my life'. I went and hid in the bottom of a grubby aviary in the garden. I sat in my white veil, hunched on the ground amongst bird seed and rat-droppings. I remember staring up at two caged parrots. They looked down. Something passed between us that could loosely be translated as: 'What a jip' That was the day I started to question the veracity of adults, the practice of keeping winged creatures in flightless boxes and organised religion (with its associated notions of being wed to a conceptual entity).
