We easier talk about others rather than ourselves. We prefer to talk in general rather than referring to concrete examples. We prefer talking in the third person rather than the first. We prefer to rationalize our experiences in order to avoid our emotions. We try to bypass our vulnerability through objectivity rather than assumed subjectivity; like it would ever be possible for us to talk, to write, to crate by reducing all aspects of self.
The current project represents a counter-exercise to the above phenomenon, bringing in front the personal subjective experience. “Who are the dragons you are running from?” is a recent, photographic series accompanied by a list of introspective questions regarding the process of re-connecting , "repairing" and becoming. Like a shy creature, how much more will we be hiding in the woods? Is building walls, letting people go, locking doors easier than meeting yourself? Do you break others in order to keep yourself together? Under the lies you tell yourself, which are the truths waiting to be unfolded? Can you rest your fingers, unveil your palms, let yourself to be seen? Who is feeding you? Who is leaving you starving? Are you following your deepest longings ? Do you surrender to your deepest truths? Do you try or do you hide behind self-fulfilling prophesies? Do you take this risk of being misunderstood? Do you listen to your pain or do you shy away from it? Are you ready to let go of the self you know in order to become the self you are becoming? Are you ready to kill anything familiar and dependable in order to grow into something new?2021

Doina Cojocaru Thanasiadis is a PhD candidate in visual arts at the National University of Arts in Bucharest. Having as a starting point the Refugee Crisis in Europe (2015-), her Doctoral research investigates hegemonic principles that shape our understanding of the topic of displacement, borders, and identity, while exposing power structures that perpetuate inequality. Her work methods explore pathways in artistic research and practice that disrupt relations of dominance in the process of meaning-making. Her methodology opts for synergy, and interpretative multiplicity. She turns towards narrative inquiry and lived experience in order to trace their relation to cultural and social phenomena by combining theory and praxis. Main mediums of expression: Photography, Installations, Video
