About The Artwork

When the Broad Museum first opened, it was madness to get a reservation. One night I was finally scheduled to go see it. As I walked in line toward the entrance, I looked up and saw this very picture. I broke away from the crowd and snapped ONE shot, worried about loosing my place in line. To me, this is an iconic shot. The Broad has been over-photographed and posted, but I have personally never seen this angle with the night sky captured in all the Broad photos. Typical for my work, the lines are never straight. I love the beehive like symmetry of the building's covering in juxtaposition with the strange angle with which it meets the sky. I was debating calling it Be-Hive, but Yong won. Yong is the Chinese character for PERMANENCE. That seemed appropriate because there is something very permanent about a museum, let alone the Broad museum both for its architectural brilliance as well as its beautiful collection. I hope the viewer will be breathless as he/she sees this image, speechless at the utter beauty of this manmade design. As archival photo print face mounted, the colors are softer and it is more sophisticated, mysterious than printed on aluminum where the colors have more depth.

I call myself the Accidental Photographer. During a sabbatical in 2012 I wished to create a memory of my experiences and photographed my surroundings with my iPhone. A new passion was born. My photographs are unpredictable, spontaneous, raw and mostly unaltered. I don’t have a theme, I photograph what I see on my journey through life. I take pictures every day hoping they will provoke an emotion, a dream, or an inspiration in the observer.
