The despotic and militarised Sovereign Sectors of the Kingdom of Lazio (SSKL) regularly despatch armed units, consisting of new recruits, to various territories for the stringent undertaking of training operations, primarily target practice. The programme is funded by Lazio’s Defence Division (LDD) and is well reputed throughout the region for their excellence in quality of teaching and prospective employment rates. Every Lazian, female and male, dreams of joining this academy of elitists and to have the golden opportunity to make a mark in the history of their kind. Egil and Ostoth are two such newcomers. Their drill sergeant has set them one of the most complicated of challenges: locking into and eliminating a far-distant moving object. Whoever is the first to neutralise the target will be rewarded handsomely, namely, an advanced military scholarship and a five year tax waive for their family. The following is a transcript of the conversation that took place between the two recruits after their supervisor left them to their devices: Egil: I’ll go first!! Ostoth: Why?! [Infuriated] Egil: Because you idiot, I’m older than you and juniors should respect the wishes of their seniors! [Smug expression] Ostoth: Ridiculous!! Talk about outdated thinking! [Suddenly clicks finger and thumb] Wait!! Let’s toss a coin! Egil: [Outburst of amusing laughter] Whatever you say you little twerp! I can’t be bothered to argue! Just want to get off this godforsaken skanky backwater! Ostoth: [Pulls out a discoloured coin] Egil: Bloody heck! Same size as our puny pea-sized target! Ostoth: Forget about size mate – they’re both ugly looking too! [Contorted face] Egil: Makes me want to shoot the bloody thing for free! Right! Much haste makes waste but we’ve wasted enough time! Say, why don’t we BOTH shoot it! Two heads better than one!! Ostoth: Oh, oh, oh…. Bloody genius! [Takes out weapon] Egil: [Weapon loaded] Primed and locked? Ostoth: Hell yeah! Egil: On my count… 3…2…1… BANG!! 8 seconds elapse… !!CATASTROPHIC EXPLOSION!! p.s. Egil and Ostoth are members of a ruthless alien race.
