About the Artist

Maxence Ma

France

I am a long-term, professional photographer whose photographic practice originally developed as an extension of my work in painting.
Photography began as a way to observe light, structure, and atmosphere — a visual research process that continues to shape my approach today.
Working primarily in black and white, I focus on landscapes and transitional spaces where stillness, movement, and time intersect.
My images are less concerned with documenting specific places than with capturing quiet emotional states — moments of pause, distance, and subtle tension.
My work has been shaped by years of photographing in Paris, with additional projects in Taiwan and Japan.
Currently, my practice is centered around central France, particularly the Loire Valley near Mosnes, where rural landscapes and shifting light provide a slower, more contemplative rhythm.
I work predominantly with analog film, which remains central to my process.
The material qualities of film — grain, tonal depth, and imperfection — allow the images to retain a tactile, reflective presence that aligns closely with my painterly background.
Through photography, I seek to create images that function as spaces for reflection rather than narrative, inviting viewers to slow down and engage with silence, ambiguity, and time.
