In an old leather jacket I laughed, I loved a way through ‘69, ‘70, ‘71, fur collar moulting even then… zip gone, leather creased and worn, silk-lined sleeves all torn, but in New Jersey farms it was just a dream - frozen time and me with a flying man’s thing. I don’t wear it any more, it’s been too fragile for years, now it looks like what it is: an ancient animal that lived and died, then resurrected from glacial scree, but I still keep this relic, it is far more subtle than me. A US pilot wore it to stay warm at high altitudes, dropping bombs on Japan in ’44, Dresden in ‘45, it made him strong. I wore it to be cool and thought it very old then, it’s much older now.
