Lithuania
Born in 1974 in Kaunas, Lithuania, where he lives and works until present as photographer, curator, publisher, educator of photography. He acquired his BA and MA in Art history at Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas (1996 and 2000). He also studied photography and art history in a number of other schools, including Kaunas Photo Art School (1989-92), EÌcole nationale de la photographie (Arles, France, 1997-98), EÌcole nationale supeÌrieure des beaux-arts (Paris, 1998), University of Lausanne (Switzerland, 2000-2001). Internships at Rencontres d'Arles (1998-2002) and MuseÌe de l'EÌlyseÌe (Lausanne, 2001) were decisive in his decision to start lecturing at a university (2001- 2006) and to launch "Kaunas Photo" festival (from 2004 until present). Directing an annual festival meant less time for personal projects. Frequent flights from one festival to another: to curated exhibitions, portfolio reviews, conferences across Europe and beyond, soon suggested a reason to continue carrying a camera. The idea of "Travel'AIR" emerged. Mindaugas Kavaliauskas has had over 30 solo exhibitions and participated in over 20 collective projects in Europe, USA, China and Australia, including National museums and recognized photo festivals. The first book by Mindaugas Kavaliauskas, "Portrait of KrazÌŒiai" was published in 2009.
