About The Artwork

FACING THE WIND - Project Description With the series „Facing the Wind“ my art becomes more figurative. “Facing the Wind” tells about people whose lives take an unexpected turn. No matter how different the causes may be, the protagonists of this series open up to a change. They are willing to leave well-worn paths – but, at the end no one knows where this journey leads to. Each portrait illustrates the brief moment of doubt that arises after the decision to take the unknown path. It is the last flaring up of the need for protection that the familiar promise. What the protagonists experienced and which situation they face is not defined; the interplay of colors, shapes and space gives an idea of it. The portraits are painted exclusively with the primary colors magenta, yellow and blue as well as white and black. Applied in several layers, their overlapping creates a wide range of colors. Portrait and background are interwoven, the person becomes one with the moment. “Facing the Wind” gives courage to face life’s challenges or – as Nietzsche said – “What does not kill me, makes me stronger.” 2) The series “Facing the Wind” is my most personal project so far. The idea arose from a phase of life in which everything suddenly turned upside down. I faced this situation … This is also reflected in my imagery, which turns from abstract to more figurative painting. – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – 1) The protagonists and their portraits are entirely fictitious. Any similarity to persons living or dead is purely coincidental and unintentional. 2) Source: Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche, Götzen-Dämmerung oder Wie man mit dem Hammer philosophiert, 1889. Artist Statement: My painting is inspired by those things which move us as human beings, which motivate us, which we are afraid of and which we love: it explores the inner motives of our external deeds. My approach is not scientific, but rather intuitive, and I focus on underlying energies which we encounter as deep and mainly archetypal sentiments. In my painting process, I face these feelings and transform them. Thus, my fear becomes courageous. Sorrow begins to hope and hate turns into love. This process led me in recent years from purely abstract to semi-abstract painting. The focus of these more figurative works are portraits of fictitious persons. They are interwoven with an unspecified, sometimes empty space. My preferred medium is acrylic paint on canvas. And a lot of water! Water implies that moment of chance and unpredictability which is not projectable. This opens up a space where the unsaid and unthought can appear. It is the space of freedom that blows up the boundaries of the familiar and refers to that what is possible beyond it. Romana G.
