Printmaking: Screenprinting on Paper. Mbanza Hamza is one of the young political prisoners that are on trial for supposedly attempting a coup d'etat in Angola. Before the trial, the young guys were remanded in custody for more than three months due to meetings in a library to discuss the regime and read the book "From dictatorship to democracy" by gene sharp. #FreedomNow is an transnational initiative that emerged and gained force specially during the hunger strike of the rapper, and also political prisioner, Luaty Beirão. Last year, on October 1st, I did the portrait of M'banza Hamza in silk screen to support #LiberdadeJa/#FreedomNow campaign. The image of this mono-print, although created chemically, with emulsion, light, water, with ink and paper, was generated with the intention to live and replicate in the digital world. And that's what happened. More than that, the image traveled and returned to the real world, in other countries, being reproduced on T-shirts and printed materials as fuel for mobilization and change. Now, the original image, saved with me ever since, is on display at OPUS Projects in Chelsea, New York during the next two months and the case of the young Angolan activists still current and urgent. With arbitrary detentions, now under house arrest, and with the trial been extended indefinitely, the financial situation of their families is increasingly complicated. I am sharing here the request for assistance from M'banza Hamza, published yesterday, on the opening day of the exhibition with his picture. Together with the association #LiberdadeJá I intend to sell the original serigraphs and reverse the full amount to the family of the activists.
