According to the Zoroastrian cosmogony Mashya and Mashyana were the first man and first woman, progenitors of the human race. The avestan names are mašya and mašyane, but the form can vary from manuscript to manuscript: mašya may present mashiia, maš'iia, mašiiai (or other variants). According to the creation myth described in the Bundahishn, the sixth creation of Ohrmuzd (Ahura Mazdā) was the primal being Gayomart (Gayormarhtan), neither male nor female. Ahriman (Angra Mainyu), the Spirit of Evil dwelling in the Absolute Darkness, sought to destroy all that Ohrmuzd had created. He sent the demoness Jeh (Jahi) to kill Gayomart and succeeded. But before the creature died, the Moon (Mah) took its seed, from which all the animals sprang. From the corpse of Gayomart grew a tree, whose seeds were the origin of all the plants, and from its branches grew Mashya and Mashyana. Both promised to help Ohrmuzd in his battle against Ahriman and gave life to fifteen pairs of twins scattered throughout the world, originating the various peoples.
