Of Italian descendent, Valeria Di Tommaso was born and raised at Buenos Aires, Argentina. She studied at the National Academies for Fine Arts -Prilidiano Pueyrredón and -Ernesto de la Cárcova, specializing in Painting and Printmaking and obtaining her PhD in Printmaking techniques and Printed Arts in 2002. Early in her career she started exhibiting and taking part in international art competitions in Argentina and abroad. She alternated her artistic activity with teaching at Buenos Aires, becoming a lecturer in drawing and printmaking techniques at the national university I.U.N.A Instituto Universitario Nacional de Artes. She moved to Europe in 2003, settling in Florence, Italy, where she had an intense activity holding both solo and group exhibitions. She became soon part of the italian printmaking community. In 2013 she was included in the archive Repertorio degli Incisori Italiani and she is a member of the printmakers group Associazione Liberi Incisori ALI based in Bologna since 2008. Today she lives and works in London, continuing with her international activity which over the years led her to exhibit in Bulgaria, Romania, Japan, Macedonia, Uruguay, Spain, Portugal, Argentina, Italy and the UK. In 2019 she has been appointed Collection Manager for Prints and Drawings at the British Museum. About my work: My work involves the creation of woodcuts, intaglio prints, drawings and three-dimensional pieces in which the strong graphic line is the core element. I'm interested in marking surfaces decisively, by making use of bold strokes, especially evident in the woodcuts. These resolved surfaces, often accompanied by equally strong colours are the hallmark of my work; a research that has often had, as a starting point, a personal concept of landscape in which many elements merge: rounded shapes, overlapped images, the use of forms derived from the same plate repeated in different ways, the use of negative and positive and a strong focus on specific details. A personal vision about geography, the natural and the urban landscape, my memories filtered by imagination, the associations with some particularly loved literature, these are recurring themes in my work, organised in series or chapters that can be read like short visual stories.
