TUESDAY, OCTOBER 1, 2013 THREE MEDITATIONS is the composition of three etchings realised, during the same day stated in the title, in Vipassana meditation state, the result of a unique project called The Experimental Cure. In particular the first meditation of this artwork was made during the global meditation tribute to the death of Vipassana master S.N. Goenka, as you can read on it. Vipassana is a very peculiar kind of meditation focusing on the “objectivity of individual perceptions”. The hand, in its exact correspondence with the point of attention of the mind going throughout the body, moves on a waxed zinc plate acting like a seismograph. It creates, then, a sort of map, often discontinuous and deformed, enriched by the endless range of experimentable perceptions, represented ex tempore with dashed lines, undulations, vectors, geometrical solids of temperature or expansion/compression, etc. An absolutely subjective and imperfect, changing alphabet that gives a shape to pleasure and pain, to what can be seen only with eyes closed. Immediately after finishing the meditation, the artwork is completed with the anatomical definition of the represented zones, and a short account of happenings preceding the meditation or come during it, presented in form of list, in order to give further information about the changing circumstances influencing the practice. This kind of investigation - where the thin light path of the consciousness through space stands out on the black background determined by the exclusion of sight - underlines the effort of the artist to communicate the impossible, while creating a bridge between Art, Science, Philosophy, Mysticism and everyday life. In the intention of Marco Tavolaro it’s meant to be, for his personal life as well as for contemporary culture and art itself, an experimental cure. The project has been officially presented in Matadero Madrid ( https://vimeo.com/67407796 ) and awarded and exhibited in many occasions, such as the FIG Grahia Award (Italy), the XXI Premios Nacionales De Grabado (Spain), the Beers Contemporary Award For Emerging Art (UK), as well as in the solo exhibition La Cura Experimental in Blanca Soto Gallery (Madrid, Spain), in 2016. Born in Naples (Italy) in 1983, Marco Tavolaro is a transmedia artist currently based in Madrid, Spain. His expressive means range from ink pen drawing to engraving, from video to animation, from land art to mapping projection, from music to performance. Starting his career as a contemporary artist in 2010, after graduating in Illustration and Multimedia Animation in the IED of Rome, his first collection of works was The Self-drawing Brain Project: using both hands he would give visual representation to the functionalities of the corresponding cerebral hemispheres. Afterwards he developed performance and land art, discussing topics such as the distortion of perception and the freedom of expression, in the Salzburg International Academy of FA (Austria) and in Medialab Prado (Madrid). In his deepening investigation about what is reality and how it is possible to represent it the most truthful way, he later created The Experimental Cure, etching engraving series realised in Vipassana meditation state, a project winning several awards and exhibited in group shows around the world and in a solo exhibition in Blanca Soto Gallery, Madrid.
