This piece is about classification and order of nature and animals by humans. Although the style of drawing and addition of text alludes to traditional natural history illustrations, the categorising (striped animals) and composition of the animals is created in a more folk taxonomic manner, making a more unusual visual form. Folk taxonomies are distinguished from scientific taxonomies in that they are more associated with social knowledge and everyday speech.

The mono colouring brings the texture of the drawing and lines into focus, highlighting the patterns of the animals fur. All the illustrations are from original hand drawings, as this observational process is an important part of my practice

Anna Walsh is a British Artist whose work investigates the relationship humans have with animals and nature. She practices traditional style illustrations and techniques to convey an accurate representation, while drawing on popular culture and approaches to present a contemporary slant to her work. She mainly uses drawing, watercolours, oil paints and screen prints, as well as digital media and book arts. Although her work is heavily influenced by natural history illustrations, the content is somewhat less scientific and more concentrated on the social roles of animals in our lives. She is a founding member of the art collective Garudio Studiage, for whom she designs and makes various products for sale, (which are sold in gallery shops and boutiques including The Museum of London, The British Library and The South London Gallery) or works on larger commissions alongside the other members. She has had several solo exhibitions at Westbourne Grove Church Art Space, and has work in collections such as Tate Gallery London Artists' Book Collection as well as various private collections.
