Chronic illness (at it's best) can leave you feeling like two people; the one that everyone sees at you best and the one that crashes at home. It's some kind of cycle, but you often never know what your going to get. This piece was my attempt to visualize that experience. Frida Kahlo's "The Two Frida" was inspiring as I thought about idea of 2 parts of myself. I drew heavily back in to this image with conte, pencil and even some red colored pencil. I made marks to emphasize the connection between the two figures. A circle and wavelike/ ekg like lines connect the figures. lightly drawn hearts on both figures emphasize the intensity of feeling for the subjects. I placed the figures in front of a bed made on one side and covered in crumpled blankets on the other side highlights the experience of fighting to get enough rest. One side is ordered with the bed made and the subject more clear (how I feel when I have energy) the other is crumpled and the figure heavily marked (how I feel when I'm exhausted). The lighted window represents the hope of getting better and the hope I feel when my body is working rightly.

I enjoy creating through drawing, printmaking and oil painting. My work grows out of my experiences and is often about issues I am dealing with or about experiences I have had. Most recently, I’m enjoying finishing a series of prints/ mixed media pieces about “Becoming.” This series explores the process of dealing with life’s hard stuff and finding joy and hope in its midst.
