About The Artwork

'A place of first permission' is an interactive floor-piece made from the crystallised rose petals of 1500 flowers. The crystallisation process preserves the form and colour of the petals, but transforms them into brittle objects which are easily crushed. The viewer is invited to walk across a thick layer of petals, crushing them underfoot. Over time the forms are broken down until, in the end, only a mixture of coloured dust is left. On the windowsill sit 1500 postcards displaying an image of an uncrushed petal and the poem 'Often I Am Permitted to Return to a Meadow' by Robert Morris, from which the title of the work is taken.
