About The Artwork

The Aldeia da Terra sculpture garden was open to the public in the municipality of Arraiolos (7000 inhabitants) between June 2011 and October 2017 and in these six years was attended, on paid visits, by about 60,000 people, among them thousands of children on school visits. In addition to boosting tourism, local economy and cultural dissemination at various levels, the project recovered 175% of the investment from its implementation at the box oce. While original and unique plastic work was declared successively by the Ministry of Culture and consequently by three distinct Ministers of Culture, as of Cultural Interest, since its opening to the public. It is a singular example in Portugal of a self-sustaining author project that, by installing itself at zero cost for a municipality with problems of interiority, made the dierence. It has also been integrated into the Alentejo Theme Parks network since its opening. In just six years it has become a tourist and cultural mark of the region, referenced in the largest national and international tourist guides, among them the prestigious Guide du Routard, translated into dozens of languages. Aldeia da Terra is a plastic work, with different symbols and character. Its stamp is clearly recognizable, coherent and consistent, and in this way it is acknowledged as an original and differentiating expression for an author. In this case, by definition, we also have a different language from others. We have a new language in the figurative Barrística in Portugal. Aldeia da Terra was thus the culmination of an individual and original journey of twenty years. Because of its idiosyncrasies, it was an idea that relied on creative solutions and, like others, based on traditional knowledge of the discipline, building the path as it traveled. If this project interprets contemporary society - as for example, the Barrística from Estremoz interpreted the eighteenth century - in a very own vision, we can also affirm that the Barrística of figurative art in Portugal is alive and dynamic. Creativity originated the traditional figurative. This institutionalized itself. Today much of it is reproduced by hand as a cultural valence and tradition. The Aldeia da Terra is a new and contemporary expression ... It is the popular culture in evolution before our eyes. As a caricature of contemporary society, this project is a personal and irreverent glance, not only of the local and regional idiosyncrasies that contextualize the reality of the author, but also of his vision of the world and its cultural references. These are, in reality, those of all of us, in the global society in which we live in. The project changed its location to Évora in October 2017 with the objective of preserving the collection and to win more audiences. It's doors are open since then, in the historical center of the World Heritage city, and at this stage of promoting and spreading the exhibitions new character, has tripled the number of visitors. Aldeia da Terra is an original and unique Art work, pioneer at various levels in the panorama of the barrística of popular gurative modeling in our country. Understanding it’s true size and potential is something that nowadays also materializes academically.
