Sculpture, Bronze on Bronze

This original sculpture was developed using the Lost-Wax Casting Technique. First, a model of the sculpture is designed in wax. A refractory mold material that can withstand extremely high temperatures then encases the wax model. After the molds are dried for weeks. Later, hot steam is used to melt the wax, leaving behind an empty cavity in the shape of the artwork. The mold is placed in a furnace to warm up while the bronze is being melted. When the bronze is ready, molds are placed on a stable surface and bronze is poured inside them. After the pieces cool down to room temperature the outside shell (mold) is then broken off, revealing the bronze inside. A long sandblasting and polishing process starts until the sculpture looks the way Lourdes Torgersen wishes. Later, various applications of different color patinas are added to bring out the final look. All the pieces of Archeological Finds can be taken repositioned and rearranged, inviting your visitors to create unique stacks of their own. Adding one or all 4 of them will compliment your home in a unique and charming way.

I’ve been creating things since I’m a young child. I enjoyed spending time sewing, re-using scraps and left over materials from everywhere to develop new projects. In my family, from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, I was presented with lots of possibilities. My mother was an art teacher and I watched her doing things all the time. My Grandma, who also lived with us, was a seamstress with incredible amounts of scraps of fabrics. My father was a writer, professor, oil painter and gallery owner. Canvasses, wires, needlepoint lines, wool, leather, beads, colors, paper, scissors, paint, wood, metals, tools of all sorts were always part of my daily routines and I happily used them all! http://www.lourdestorgersen.com
