This piece has been inspired by Peter Jackson's movie 'The Hobbit. An unexpected journey'. As a teenager I read J.R.R. Tolkien's trilogy 'The Lord Of The Rings'. It was a huge tome, but I was engrossed and used to read it during my breaks at work. (Shannon Airport). Many years later, Peter Jackson burst into my world with his adaptations of the 'Lord of the Rings' and 'The Hobbit'. I created this Blue Goblin, in homage to his imagination, vision and overwhelming talent. The frame is wood, covered in paper and painted a shimmering gold colour. The black velvet type background frames the head itself, which is made from clay, covered with paper and painted with shimmering paints in blue, violet, gold and copper. The ears are made from paper and sport battle scars, or rather they are both missing chunks of ear, bitten off in savage battle. As Goblins like to adorn themselves with jewelery, I have added three metal rings, covered in paper and painted gold. The eyes both have a glittered green background and white Iris. The pupil is a circle of black paper. One of the eyes has a more exaggerated droop to the eyelid than does the other. The eyebrows are bushy and jut out over the eyes. The hair is of similar texture and is copper and gold coloured. The nose is prominent and mis-shapen and leads onto the mouth, which houses jagged and vicious teeth, all but obscured by glittering yellow froth and drool. The chin is also prominent. The head is emerging from the frame in a very threatening manner. No prisoners will be taken. Run for your life!... As this piece can be displayed either horizontally, or diagonally, the wall fixings are included but not attached. You choose your preference.

My name is Deborah Minogue. I am an Irish Artist. I create mixed-media/combined materials artworks. I use objects that can be re-purposed, as well as new and made components. I source these objects from Auctions and House Clearances. The challenge is to create something interesting from something that was previously of little or no interest. I am interested in the 'Victorian Gothic' style of literature. Bram Stoker's Dracula, and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein made an impression on me and the series of films, made in the late 1950's by the British Film Company 'Hammer Horror' brought these characters to life. I use paper, paint, textiles, wood, glass, plastic, metal and sparkling glitters. The paints are light reflective and they change appearance when viewed in different lighting. The glitter looks spectacular under artificial light, while the paints appear metallic. My pieces are sculptural and usually free-standing. There is only one of each piece.
