BOOK OF SHADOWS Sculpture

This piece is an altered book, depicting my imagining of a Grimoíre, or Book of Shadows. The Book is set on its base at a diagonal. It is a free standing, dual aspect artwork. The book is sealed and cannot be opened. It is merely a visual piece. The original book has been covered in paper and is painted in shimmering colours of violet, blue, green and gold. The front of the piece features the word 'Grimoire' which has been constructed from cardboard and has been covered in burgundy coloured fine grade glitter. There is a gold coloured elaborate key and lock denoting how to unlock the binding which is enclosing part of the outer edge. The binding culminates in a Pentagram Seal on the front and has the appearance of being secured in place by gold rivets. These are made from strong card stock. These elements have been made using plastic and paper. The Black Widow on the front has been made from paper, cotton wool and sewing needles and is coloured black with red glittering marks on her back. The sealed leaves of the book are covered in the same burgundy coloured glitter that adorns the title of the book. On the back there is a withered Witch's hand, the structure of which is made from plastic and cotton wool. The hand is covered in paper and painted the same shimmering green colour as is on the front cover of the book. Finger nails have been added and painted with black nail varnish. These are made from plastic. There is a medieval style ring on the middle finger and it has a silver surround with diamond style costume jewels and a costume bloodstone in it's centre. (I wore this ring at my wedding and have fond memories of it). Covering the wrist there is black fabric lace which has been given a covering of red, black and purple glitter. The hand is resting on an oval plaque made of cardboard and surrounded by a string of small beads, with burgundy coloured glitter. The corners of both the front and back of the book have been embellished with black lace fabric on cardboard, painted violet and showing through the lace. Two resin Rune Stones, covered in paper and painted to match the cover, adorn the spine along with three pairs of parallel paper ridges, to give the appearance of an old book. The meaning of the Runes: The upper Rune means Protection and the lower Rune means Strength.
