About The Artwork

The visual language of Romero-Matos is molded under the artistic currents of kinetic art and the aesthetics of the rhythms of virtual movement. Pictorically, it is based on optical illusions and the vibration of color in the retina. His works of moving color change appearance depending on the multiple combinations of points of view and mixes of the reflection of light on the geometric elements and compositions. It's a dance of light, shapes and color where readings can be infinite. The art pieces and compositions are three-dimensional and lift off the two-dimension base with fixed elements arranged so that the viewer discovers the changes in an interactive integration between art and man. After years of transforming recycling materials into abstract three-dimensional shapes of moving color, blending light and reflections, while evoking beautiful shapes of nature, Romero-Matos has experimented with new materials such as brass and aluminum. Appreciating the luxurious feel of brass and the lightness of aluminum this latest piece has brought new perspectives for future designs.

Jorge Romero Matos was born in Venezuela in 1953, grew up amongst art and surrounded by architects. His father [1], whose most important work was included recently in an exhibit [2] at the MOMA museum in New York, was his first teacher . Memories of beautiful handmade “blue prints”, in-house art magazine editorial [3], seemingly impossible ideas ahead of their time, construction projects and the ever present integration of the arts and architecture defined his early passion which has only grown with the passing years. Driven by admiration he decided to follow the Architecture path as well and started working young, first as an apprentice in his father’s Architectural Studio, and later sculpting his own road. As an architect Romero-Matos has had the joy of working independently for over thirty years and build many of the projects that once were only ideas. Art as a means of personal expression came later in his life, initially in a timid way as catharsis amidst a difficult personal transition and later it shaped with confidence his experience and it’s now ever present in his daily creative processes and exploration. Romero believes that art is a spiritual act, an inner conviction and a means to bring out all the creative energy that shouts from within, a desire to materialize feelings yet wanting to speak beyond the world of the material. He is continuously inspired by nature forces such as the movements of the waves, storms and the ocean that is always present in his life in the island. The influence of recognized Venezuelan kinetic and modernist artists: Manaure, Cruz Diez and Soto, which he admires profoundly, served as initial inspiration which later gave place to a language and style of his own: Volukinecromias. Romero-Matos feels humbled that his artistic path has been prolific and the result it's an extensive amount of works completed in the past 14 years.
