During my childhood I briefly used cassettes until CD's took over, but there was always something irreplaceable about the tape itself, the effort they took to make, the sound they produce, and the sleeve with the cover art and lyrics inside. They produce a certain feel in time, memories of cinematic excellence, and a sense of love and of a simpler moment in history. I wanted to capture these emotions and cast them in bronze, purposefully aging the work and making it imperfect to reflect the journey of the cassette itself and the times it represents. I took a mold of an actual cassette and completed the rest of the process to pour it into bronze, which was quite difficult to capture the small details such as the inner wheels or the bottom section where the tape is read through the player. Overall I am very happy with how this came out and hope that someone else feels the same emotions I do when they see it.

Bradley Kahabka currently resides in Long Beach California, where he has received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Drawing and Painting from California State University Long Beach with a minor in sculpture. Brad's oil paintings often reference a sense of nostalgia, a personal connection to the past and things that have been forgotten, while at the same time pushing the boundaries of modernity. His bold brushwork, color and aesthetic decisions encapsulate his background during his youth, his time as a soldier in the Army, and of his love for the romantic period of painting. He places a high value on the introspection of self, of the significance of things from a bygone era, and of the contemplation of the overlooked and often mundane situations that define life’s journey. His work has been shown from California to Texas, and has had work showcased in the CSULB art museum and president’s house.
