City I Sculpture

City I The first composition is part of a series of works exploring the concept of a city as a social and economic system, as a community of people with fears and dreams, and as a living entity. Citieshave been effected by recent economic shocks especially the banking crisis. City 1 expresses the idea that the world is moved by unknown powers and by unknown people who, acting in their own interest, created a global economic crisis effecting billions of people. In this work, each element in the dreamscape city can be seen part of a symbolic reaction to these economic events. Bottles, with more or less content, are formed into buildings. Surreal effluent surmounts them, perhaps carrying dreams, prayers, wishes, sorrowful or averitious thoughts. It rises, representing a form of pollution formed not from waste, but from the human psyche. The buildings stand on a podium, perhaps a place where a battle is constantly joined. It is like a map with strategically placed battalions, or like chess board where the game is played by unknown players for unknown stakes. When the economic crisis started I felt someone was manipulating huge masses of energy, and we had all became tiny particles, subject to these forces. We are small and powerless. We cannot resist. We cannot protect ourselves. We cannot stop ourselves being washed away.
