City II Sculpture

City II continues the exploration of the City theme, although it predates City I by three years. The concept grew from my observation of works to renew Victorian water mains in my street. I was stuck by the contrast between the old Victorian pipe-work and the modern bright blue replacements, looking somewhat ridiculous and artificial in a gritty urban setting. I had already bought pipes for another purpose, so I decided to create a composition from them. Pipes pass around us and underneath us, unnoticed. They slide down from houses and meet under streets, then continue in all directions. A computer representation of all the pipes under a city would resemble the city’s circulatory system, carrying necessary supplies one way, and city waste another, allowing the city to live.
