Conor McGregor bust Sculpture

I needed a suitably heroic modern fighter to make the point that it is very difficult to find heroes who embody the virtues of the ancient world. McGregor is as close to the boastful, youthful Achilles or the tragic Chucullain as the modern world can provide. It is a unique and beautiful piece, sculpted in the ancient three quarter pose, with early twentieth century Irish script for the nameplate, and a nice touch on the rear plate (which is sculpted to mimic broken slate) of using the old Irish Ogham script to spell his name in a forgotten style. I suppose it is part lament that there are so few modern heroes worthy of bronze. I hope that this piece at least will record the transience of celebrity in something more than an Instagram snap. McGregor, because of this sculpture, is one of a handful of living people who will still have a physical extant image an hundred years from now. I picked him, ultimately, because he dedicated his first major victory to his people, and that was the first echo I had heard in modern times, of the Hero dedicating his victory to those who had nurtured him.
