About The Artwork

Crown Monogram of Marie Antoinette metal wall sculpture. Line design is cast in bronze and has a high polish This sculpture is part of the French Revolution Collection and highlights the imagery of the French aristocracy. Marie Antoinette was an iconic personality of this time period, known for her opulent lifestyle and her famous words which turned the starving mob against her, "Let them eat cake!" Her personal monogram included this crown which features the fleur de lis. 'Fleur' is French for flower and 'lis' means lily. It is a symbol of the French monarchy, especially the house of Bourbon. It also appears regularly in heraldry and French coat of arms. It is also a highly prominent symbol in the city of New Orleans where the artist performs her studio work. The French Revolution Collection features Karina Stanton’s unique style of cast filigree in bronze and stainless steel. The fine art sculptures of the exhibition capture the iconic symbols of 18th century France, such as the opulent wigs of Marie Antoinette and the brutal efficiency of the guillotine, and relates these symbols to modern day America. The artwork draws the audience into the past, to reveal the present and ask questions about the future. Karina Stanton is a local artist who specializes in traditional metalsmithing techniques such as lost wax casting and anvil forging. Her artistic process involves fabrication from raw materials over use of refined objects to create one of a kind, precisely hand-crafted sculptures. Karina Stanton is a renaissance woman whose art touches on many topics from quantum theory to heavy metal. Her work deals with social culture worldwide and emphasizes knowledge and history. The progression of mankind’s ideas throughout time are visualized by recognizable symbols, such as the guillotine, and draw upon the personal experience of the viewer through the lens of the social, economic, and religious associations within local and world culture. Karina Stanton has been showing her work in various galleries and exhibitions since 2006. She often travels worldwide and divides her residence between New Orleans, LA and her hometown of Grand Rapids, MI.

Karina Stanton is a permanent student of world literature, philosophy, history, culture, religion and current events. Her artwork implements the ideas and object symbols of these disciplines which combine to highlight the narratives of both mankind and the individual. Form is influenced by the fluid precision of art nouveau and the simplified forms of abstract minimalism. Unifying themes concentrate on the perception of time, its relativity, how it effects mankind, and the personal experiences of memory, presence, and expectation. Line is the primary visual element and symbols from cultural and historical objects are often abstracted down to simplified linear shapes. These symbolic representations ask the viewer stimulating questions about their personal experience with the original object and what it represents to themselves and in society. Process involves fabrication from raw materials over use of refined objects to create one of a kind, precisely hand-crafted sculptures with significant preference for traditional metalsmithing techniques such as lost wax casting and anvil forging. Karina Stanton has been showing her work in various galleries and exhibitions since 2006. She often travels worldwide and divides her residence between New Orleans, LA and Grand Rapids, MI.
