In ‘Crystal’ the work attempts to contrast the properties of the material, its mass and substance with the transparency and reflectivity of the glass which allows the incident light to be reflected, transmitted, absorbed and diffracted. The surface is seen in the calligraphy like patterns reflected from the front of the blocks, the absorption and transmission by the light and shadows cast behind the blocks and the diffraction by deflection of light transmitted. Partly inspired by the work of Carl Andre and the properties of the blocks.

My practice is strongly influenced by my background in engineering. Research and experimentation are important elements. I love the challenge of using different processes and exploring new ideas and ways of seeing. I can categorise my work into subject groups such as, nature/figurative/organic, mathematical/geometrical, or political/social. It can also be partitioned by methodology: for example; the investigation of perceptual processes (such as illusion or tactile effects), exploration of edges, boundaries, voids and volume, or repetition, collections and multiples. While visual impact is important to me, the exploration of the idea is often the most critical element. The geneses of my projects are diverse. Ideas may come from a particular material, an object, an event, a suggested theme, the natural world, an image or a process. Typically, I will devise a question, or set up a research process, or a series of experiments, the results of which inform and steer me towards the final work. I often work on several themes simultaneously. I work in a variety of materials according to needs of the work in progress, this has included sculptures in wood, stainless steel as well as castings in glass, bronze and iron. The design process is necessarily iterative, frequently requiring additional contextual and technical research to extend my conceptual and theoretical knowledge of subject, art practice, tools and processes. This often generates a series of related but disparate ideas for work. I work from my studio in West Wales.
