About The Artwork

Cubicle is part of the WIRED series in which sculptor Camey McGilvray examines the frenetic pace of contemporary life with its bombardment of 24/7 information and the effects that electronic devices and constant connectivity have on inter-personal relationships. The title WIRED refers not only to being up tight but also to being equipped with all the latest electronic gadgets deemed essential to contemporary communication. The incorporation of actual wire into each piece uses the properties of the material itself to further the narrative. Cubicle is a glimpse into the anonymity and isolating characteristics of the Cube Farm. In this wood and wire triptych, dozens of faceless “inhabitants” have all of the latest communication devices, but are alone in their nondescript cubicles, a situation that serves to isolate them from human contact and from all but the most superficial communication. Furnishings in each of the twenty-four offices are acrylic painted in subtle gray and gray/green tones set against a blue background. The 24 little office workers (Chair Rung People) are individually fashioned from repurposed wooden chair rungs and outfitted with unique wire headpieces. Cubicle is a visually stunning art piece, as well as a revealing slice of life in hyperdrive, in this case, the business world.

Camey Mcgilvray is a Los Angeles based artist who uses wood, wire and metal to create abstract, contemporary wall sculptures and freestanding sculptures. The work is purely imaginative and evocative rather than representational and relies on the shape and placement of the materials, as well as cast shadows, color and texture to convey the idea to the viewer. McGilvray was born and raised in New Jersey. She studied art at St. Lawrence University, the University of the Americas in Mexico City, and the New School and Art Students League in New York City, where she lived before settling in Los Angeles. Her work is included in private collections and exhibited nationally.
